Generic vs. Manufacturer-Specific P-Code Ranges: What DIY Drivers Need to Know
P0000–P0999 is the generic powertrain range described by SAE J2012. P1000–P1999 and higher ranges may use manufacturer-specific definitions, so the same code can mean different faults across makes or models and may require vehicle-specific service information.
A code identifies a detected condition; it does not prove a failed component, root cause, safety state, or guaranteed repair. Record the exact vehicle and code, then verify the next test against the maker’s documentation.
